13-year-old girl forced to marry her ‘rapist’ step-brother

A man in his 20s has married his 13-year-old step-sister after making her pregnant.
The marriage took place in the northwest region of Kef in Tunisia, in the presence of their parents who had previously attempted to stop the wedding.
Although having sex with someone under the age of 15 is punishable by up to six years in prison under Tunisian law, according to article 277 of the country’s criminal code, if no force was used during the attack an alleged rapist can halt his prosecution by marrying his victim.
Chokri Mejri, a spokesperson for the court, claimed the girl “was not raped”.
“We interviewed the girl and after verifying all the details, we considered her fit for marriage,” Mr Mejri said.
The North African country has lead the way on advancing women’s rights within the Arab world, yet gender stereotypes and archaic laws remain ingrained in its justice system.
The court’s decision has enraged Tunisians who demonstrated outside the country’s parliament on Wednesday holding placards bearing messages such as: “How I met your mother? I raped her when she was 13.”

Dog eats new born baby dumped at refuse site in Bauchi

A newborn baby abandoned by its mother at a refuse dump at the Federal Polytechnic Student Village, Gwallameji, Bauchi State, was Sunday reportedly eaten up by a dog.
Vanguard reports that a passerby raised the alarm when he walked into the scene.
The eyewitness said, “I was coming back from church when I saw many people behind a house away from ours. I became curious and went to see what was happening there.

NUPENG to begin 3-day warning strike soon

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has declared that it will commence a three-day warning strike on January 9, 2017 against an alleged anti-labour practice of International Oil Companies.
This was disclosed by the South-West chairman of the union, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, when he spoke to newsmen in Lagos yesterday, adding that the warning strike was inevitable as all other options had failed.
According to him, “We are not gaining anything by going on strike because it is not a joyful thing but as a union, we have to protect and fight for the welfare of our members.

“We have sensitised the public and also seek the intervention of the Federal Government on the anti-labour activities of the IOCs against our members but we are not getting results.
“Our members that put in their best within the time they worked were not paid their severance packages by their employers after they sacked them. This is a big slap and it will not be allowed.
“What they are practising here in Nigeria, they cannot practise in their countries; so, that is why we say enough is enough.”
“Two hundred and fifty members of our union members were affected by the divestment by Chevron Nigeria Limited in the South-East. And this is giving us a serious concern because they cannot feed their families.
“The Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige, asked all parties to maintain the status-quo ante and we complied because we respect the authorities, but the IOCs seem to be above the law or more powerful than the government; they failed to maintain the status-quo ante which was amicably agreed on by both parties.

Crude oil discovered in Borno state – Nigeria Govt.

Following months of exploration activities, Borno State has joined the club of states producing oil in the country with the discovery of crude oil in the troubled state.
The Federal Government made this known yesterday through the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Jamila Shua’ra, who was however silent on the particular area in Borno State where the oil was discovered and if the discovery was in commercial quantity.
Disclosing this during the agreement signing ceremony for joint venture, JV, cash call exit and presentation of the petroleum sector score card in Abuja, Shua’ra attributed the discovery of oil in Borno and Lagos states  to the doggedness of the present administration.

In the scorecard presented to stakeholders, the ministry also pointed out that the introduction of Price Modulation Mechanism and Appropriate Pricing Framework had helped the Federal Government to save N1.4 trillion that would have been expended on subsidy payment between May and November.
The ministry also announced that the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, would by next year conduct bid rounds for open blocks and conclude the previously aborted marginal fields bid round to enhance the entry of new players, stimulate competition and generate revenue for the government.

My husband impregnated my sister twice – Wife tells court

A 55-year-old trader, Mrs Saidat Abu, on Thursday told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos that her husband was a flirt who impregnated her younger sister on two occasions.
She said this while responding to a suit filed by her husband, Momodu, alleging threat to his life by his wife.
Saidat, who alleged that her husband did not only commit adultery but incest, said, “My husband was having an affair with my sister, he impregnated her and aborted the pregnancy on two occasions.
“I decided not to fight him in order to save my marriage.”
The mother of two also described her husband as a wicked and callous man.
She said, “My husband took me to the hospital and connived with the doctor to remove my womb so that I will not be pregnant again.
“After destroying my womb, he is now telling me that he wants to marry another woman so that he can have a son that will inherit his property.
“He also told me he wants to sell our house so that he can settle our daughters and rent an apartment for me before he moves on with his life.”
She, however, begged the court not to grant her husband’s request, saying she was still in love with him.
She said, “Who will marry me now after my husband has destroyed my womb? Please do not grant his request.”
Her husband, a 60-year-old businessman, had approached the court to end his 33-year-old marriage over his wife’s alleged fetish act.
He said, “My wife is fetish; I came back from work one day and discovered a portion in my compound was cemented.
“I was curious to know what was buried in the ground, so I called my people and we dug the ground and saw a charm buried there.
“My wife wanted to kill me so that she can inherit my property.”
The petitioner presented as evidence pictures of the buried charm.
Momodu also said that his wife does not cook or wash his clothes.
He said, “My wife cannot do any house chore; I am married but living like a single man, I can no longer tolerate her.”
He further accused his wife of inscribing “This house is not for sale ” on the wall of his house without his consent.
The petitioner urged the court to terminate the marriage, saying he was fed up.
The court’s president, Mr. Adegboyega Omilola, after listening to the couple, adjourned the case till Feb. 7 for further hearing.

Beware of fake pastors, prayer houses during pregnancy – Gynecologist advises women

A gynecologist, Dr Ado Zakari, on Friday advised pregnant women to desist from patronizing prayer houses for delivery to avoid complications.
Zakari, also the Director, Public Health, Kaduna State Ministry of Health and Human Services, gave this advice in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
The medical expert decried the increasing cases of pregnant women who patronised prayer houses and faith- based centres to assist them during deliveries.
He said this usually resulted into complications such as the Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), excessive bleeding and death.
“ There is an increasing belief in our country that is taking over the minds of some pregnant women that it is better to deliver in prayer houses or some faith-based centres, where a pastor will pray for you and you deliver there.
“ This mindset has brought a lot of complication to pregnant women because these persons do not have any technical knowledge about delivery process and what to do when the labour is prolong or obstructed.
“So most of the pregnant women eventually end up having complications such as fistula, bleeding and may even cause damage to some of their organs and even death, ’he said.
Zakari, therefore, stressed the need for pregnant women to register at government approved hospitals for ante-natal care to ensure safe delivery.
They should discountenance delivering at home or prayer houses with the assistance of unqualified persons, he said.
According to him, deliveries in most government hospitals or centres are usually free or a small token is charged for some drugs.
Meanwhile, Mrs Grace Timothy, a housewife told NAN that she was advised by some of her relatives and friends to patronise a prayer house to enable her conceive after 12 years of marriage without a child.
Timothy said that she was able to conceive a child, but was advised by the pastor at the prayer house not to visit any medical institution for her ante-natal or scan to show the condition of her child.
“ I almost lost my life when labour started and I was rushed to the prayer house for delivery and it got to a point that I was bleeding extensively, and had to be rushed to the hospital, but I lost the baby.’’
She expressed regrets for her action, advising other women to always seek medical assistance from trained persons to enable them have a safe and uncomplicated delivery.
“ It is good to pray, but there is also the need for one to seek medical help when the need arises from trained persons. Because God will also use those trained nurses and doctors to ensure a hitch-free delivery,’’ she said.

True confession: HELP! Mum checks my virginity status every month

Good morning editor.
I am a girl of 19 years. I just got admitted into one of the private universities in North Central studying Banking and Finance.
My parents broke up when I was barely 3 years so I didn’t really spend much time with my dad, who is already married to another woman overseas.
My mum is so protective that whenever she sees me standing with a male friend she would want to beat the hell out of me.
He told me that my dad used sugar-coated mouth to deceive her and put her in the family way, which made her to drop out from school.
She warned me never to have anything to do with a man till I’m married.
Inasmuch as I buy into her counsel, I am tired of this constant embarrassment and harassment from her each time she sees me talking to any guy.

Lawyer narrates how presumed 7-year-old boy was lynched in Lagos

As controversies continue to trail the alleged gruesome murder of a 7-year-old boy for allegedly stealing garri in Lagos, Kingsley Ughe, General Counsel for Joint Action Aids has given his own account of the luciferous incident.
The legal practitioner, claimed the victim and his gang tried to dispossess a woman of her belongings.
According to Ughe in a Facebook post titled, ‘A Thief and A Frenzied Mob Baying for Blood,’ the victim was a member of a gang of notorious thieves and not a seven-year-old boy, as widely claimed in the media..
He explained that the young man met his waterloo after his gang tried to rob a woman of her belongings, including an Infinix Note 2 phone, at Augustine Onwualu street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos last Saturday.
Read Ughe’s account below
The true account of the young man lynched and summarily burnt to death at Orile Iganmu last Saturday speaks of the uncertainty and brevity of human life in Nigeria. It was Saturday, the 11th day of November 2016. The venue of this macabre killing orgy was at Augustine Onwualu Street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos.
A woman, (name withheld) was walking along the ever busy road of Augustine Onwualu street, Orile Iganmu. She had an Infinix Hotnote 2 handset with which she was making telephone calls in high pitched voice, frantically gesticulating in the process. Close by, on the same street were a gang of 4 notorious thieves, well known in the area for their dare devilry and viciousness. They were there, waiting, prowling and surveying the entire scenery for a vulnerable victim to rob and dispossessed of their valuables as they often do in the past. And successfully too.
“The woman approached. Still talking on the phone and gesticulating with her free arm. She was immediately spotted by the very perceptive eyes of this criminal gang. A brief conference amongst them, she was adjudged a soft target. There was no need for further plans or careful surveillance. After all they had done this successfully in the past. More so, their sheer ferocity makes them a sort of feared mobster in the local vicinity. But it turned out to be a miscalculation. And costly one at that!

MMM: CBN denies approving scheme

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has again asked Nigerians to dismiss reports that it has approved the operation of Russian ponzi scheme, The Mavrodi Mondial Movement, otherwise known as MMM.
The movement is a scheme that assures up to 30% interest of money invested.
A new report circulating online claimed that participants are challenging Nigerian authorities for “poking their nose into the affairs of well meaning foreigners that have come to rescue them from money issues.”
It claimed that, “CBN governor has allayed the fears of skeptical Nigerians and disclosed that thorough checks carried out on the organisation shows that it is a legitimate investment facility.
It also claimed that “A top official at the Ministry of Finance said even the federal government has invested the sum of N100b in MMM so that the interest of N30b can be reinvested in capital projects across the nation.”
Reacting, Isaac Okorafor, Acting Director, CBN Corporate Communications, told DAILY POST on Thursday that, “There’s nothing like that.”
“Nigerians should ignore any report claiming the we approved financial institutions that don’t even exist.”
Okorafor added: “I repeat, Nigerians should ignore questionable schemes”.
Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission early in the week told DAILY POST that it was carrying out surveillance on the MMM investment scheme

NYSC confirms 2016 Batch B Stream II will commence orientation in January 2017

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has assured university graduates and members of the public, that it has made necessary arrangements to ensure eligible prospective corps members, are mobilized in the next service year.
Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Sule Kazaure, made this known in Abuja on Wednesday, during a media parley organized for editors and reporters from media houses.
Stream I of the next batch for NYSC mobilisation, which is the 2016 Batch ‘B’, will commence orientation exercise on November. 24
The 2016 Batch ‘B’ stream II are expected to commence orientation in January 2017.
Kazaure revealed that the scheme can only cater for 86,000 out of the 170,000 eligible for the next service year, but will make sure the rest partake.
“In the 2016 budget, provision was made for the mobilisation of a total of 210,000 corps members. However, the figure for both 2016 Batch ‘A’ and Batch ‘B’ has more than doubled the original projection,” he said.
“Like we did before the 2016 Batch ‘A’ orientation course, we have appealed to government for special intervention grant to mop up excess of this figure.
“So far, we have received the green light from the relevant government agencies to prepare for the mobilisation of all qualified prospective corps members.
“However, the limited cumulative capacity of the orientation camps nationwide necessitates a second stream orientation course for the 2016 Batch ‘B’ which is planned for January 2017.”
Kazaure also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and some state governors, for their intervention in strengthening the operations of the NYSC.

The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, VC, of the University, Prof. Labode Poopola, on Tuesday expressed disappointment that a lecturer who is supposed to be a parent or guardian to the students could engage in such ‘immoral’ act.
While fielding questions from newsmen during an interactive session in Osogbo, the state capital, the VC said the randy lecturer was disengaged from the institution as a warning signal to others who are also in the act or may want to get themselves involve in such an act in the future.
He said, “A lecturer is supposed to be a parent. It is worse; it is an immoral act and should be condemned. We have to nip the scandal in the bud. Whatever has happened in UNIOSUN happens in any profession. Just that it is worse if it happens here (UNIOSUN).
“The system has laid down methods of dealing with any one that engages in such
“There are disciplinary measures, no lecturer will have infractions on our values and won’t be disciplined. When we find someone defaulting, the university takes all necessary steps.
“On this matter, the university took all the steps at all levels – Departmental, Faculty, Senate. Whatever you might read lately is the decision of the council. I am not in a position to say what next will be done.”

I caught my husband sexually abusing our 6-year-old daughter – Woman tells court

A housewife in Abuja, Francisca Okechukwu, on Monday filed for divorce, accusing her husband, Tony Okechukwu, of sexually abusing their six-year old daughter.
In her divorce application filed at Jikwoyi Customary Court, Abuja, Francisca, a business woman, alleged that she had, on many occasions, caught her husband fiddling with her daughter’s private part.
“I caught my husband touching my daughter’s private part, his biological daughter”, she alleged.
The petitioner told the court that she had been suspecting her husband of the act “ because of the way he carries the twin daughters.
“Each time he carries the children (twin) on his lap, his manhood will rise up, and if he is not satisfied with that, he will go and pull off his cloth and tie his towel,” she told the court.
The petitioner also alleged that her husband might have had carnal knowledge of her daughter.
“There was a day the twin had a nap in their father’s room in the evening but when they were having their bath the next morning, one of them was complaining of a pain in her private part.
“When I checked her, I saw a cut which pained her for over three days,” she added.
She therefore begged the court to dissolve the marriage and grant her custody of the children.
The husband, Okechukwu , also a business man, however denied all the allegations.
The Presiding officer, Mr Labaran Gusau, adjourned the case to Nov. 16th for hearing. (NAN)
