2015: Mark canvasses smooth transition, laments Kano massacre

Senate President, David Mark on Saturday canvassed for a smooth electoral process that would make the 2015 general elections most credible and acceptable to all parties.Mark said the electoral process should be anchored on rule of law and the will of the people rather than use of violence or coercion by any leader, in whatever capacity. The senate president, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Paul Mumeh, stated this while addressing constituents in his Otukpo, Benue state country home during the Saturday’s Peoples Democratic Party’s House of Assembly primaries. He added that elections should be guided by rules and acceptable international best practices. He cautioned against desperation by political office seekers reminding them that election is like a game that must produce a winner and loser.Mark said, “Whichever side of the divide we may find ourselves we must rise above sentiments to accept the verdict of the elections as long as the rules are complied with.“We are all stakeholders in the project Nigeria. Both leaders and the led must therefore work in one accord to make Nigeria a better place. This task demands collective responsibility”.Mark in the same vein decried the massacre of worshippers at Friday’s central Mosque in Kano describing the gruesome murder as an act of madness by the perpetrators. He noted that the perpetrators have lost their senses as humans and urged all right thinking members of the society to rise up against the terrorists putting asunder to the peace and unity of Nigeria.Mark therefore urged security operatives not to be deterred by recalcitrant attitude of the insurgents but be further strengthened to continue to protect and defend the territorial integrity of the nation.
