Uduaghan shun labour day celebration, as NLC holds parallel rallies in Delta

DELTA State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, Friday shunned workers celebration which was held in Asaba amidst tight security due to the fractionalization of the State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.Uduaghan,  Vanguard gathered summoned the two factions for a meeting last Thursday with a view to resolving the crisis but it ended in deadlock. The Governor who dissatisfied with the outcome of the meeting told the two factions that he would not attend the May day celebration since the matter could not be resolved.However, Governor Uduaghan who was represented by his Special Adviser on Labour Relations, Comrade Mike Okeme congratulated the workers and assured that his administration was not owing workers salaries.He said he would ensure that local government workers salaries were paid before May 29th . Earlier, one ofthe factional Chairmen of the State NLC, Comrade David Ofoyeno enumerated the challenges of workers across the state and appealed to the governor to find a lasting solution to the problems in order to sustain industrial harmony.Ofoeyeno decried the challenges of facing “pensioners in the state, local government workers; shortage of nurses in state hospitals; snail pace of work at the construction of permanent secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, among others.“We strongly appeal to the governor to expedite action on the building of the Delta NUJ Press Centre as promised by his administration. We are worried that progress of work on the laudable project has been slow and urge the governor to release funds for the early completion”.Meanwhile, a parallel workers day celebration was held in Warri by the Comrade William Akporeha led faction.
