Ita-Giwa raises fears over PVC collection in Bakassi

A former presidential aide, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, on Wednesday expressed fears over the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards in the Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State.Ita-Giwa said the majority of registered voters residing in Bakassi, Cameroon, had yet to collect their PVCs, following an earlier closure of the border between both countries when the Ebola Virus Disease posed a threat. She said arrangements were currently being made to mobilise Bakassi indigenes that are still resident in the ceded territory to return to Nigeria to pick their PVCs and exercise their franchise during the February elections. Our correspondent gathered from the Cross River State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Calabar that the total number of PVCs collected for Bakassi in July 2014 was 6,325, while as of January 27, only 1,218 had been collected. But Ita-Giwa, who spoke with journalists in Calabar, said the reason for the poor collection was that most registered voters are currently living in Cameroon and working to fend for their families.
