Police shut down Asaba for Jonathan

Business and social activities in Asaba, the capital of Delta State were paralysed on Friday as the police blocked major roads to provide security for the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the city.As early as 7am, hundreds of policemen mobilised from virtually all the commands of the state were deployed in Asaba.They lined up the streets and blocked major junctions with their patrol vans. Residents and motorists that were caught unawares had to go through back streets and tortuous ‘nkoro’ roads to get to their destinations.Those that could not get their vehicles through the difficult road blocks and long alternative route had totrek long distances.The President was billed to visit delta State traditional rulers at the palace of the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Chike Edozien, and hold private meetings with select groups as part of his campaign.He was also scheduled to interact with people of Northern Nigeria origin in the southern parts of the country at the Asaba Cenotaph on Saturday.But up till Friday afternoon, he had not arrived Asaba, and residents had to cope with the situation.The venue of his meeting with traditional rulers was also cordoned off and local media were not allowedin by security agents.
